Mixing is where separate recordings become a song: levels, panning, EQ, compression, effects and automation decide whether a chorus lifts or sinks. At Murkiernode in Amsterdam we mix tracks recorded here and projects you send from elsewhere, as long as the files are technically sound.

Mixing is not mastering: you receive a strong mixdown, not a final master for streaming. For loudness, sequence and export formats, book mastering next. Read delivering stems for mixing before you upload folders — it saves back-and-forth mail.

How it works

    Inventory

    Send track list, tempo, references and whether we work from studio multitracks or external stems. We confirm rate and timeline within 2 business days.

    Import

    Files are checked for sample rate, clipping and sync. Missing stems or wrong start points are fixed before the mix starts.

  3. 03

    Mix pass

    First mix within the agreed window. You listen on headphones and speakers; bundle feedback per revision round.

  4. 04

    Revisions and export

    Up to 2 rounds with concrete notes. Then we deliver WAV mixdown and optional instrumental without lead vocal.

Two entry paths

After recording here: multitracks from band recording or vocal recording go straight to the mix engineer. Names and session layout are already known, which saves time.

From supplied stems: export one file per track from your DAW, identical length, same start point. Rate €420 applies when we did not record the session; see delivering stems for mixing for technical rules.

What mixing does and does not do

We aim for a balance where every part stays audible without bass masking vocals. Dynamics can punch or breathe — you steer with references, not vague “make it warmer” without an example.

Mixing excludes rearrangement, new recording, beat replacement unless agreed upfront, and vocal coaching. Heavy repair (denoise, de-clip) may cost extra hours; we flag that before starting.

Revisions and feedback

2 revision rounds are included. A round works best with numbered points: “verse 2: vocal 1 dB lower”, “guitar solo pan later”, not ten scattered chat messages over days.

Rounds beyond the included count are billed at engineer hourly rate by agreement. Changes after approval start a new job.

Rates

Figures are consumer prices including 21% VAT. Business clients receive invoices with 14 days to pay.

Delivery formats

Default is stereo WAV mixdown 24-bit/48 kHz, plus instrumental without lead vocal on request. MP3 references are for quick checks, not master sources.

Mix stems (drums bus, bass bus, etc.) are only delivered if ordered upfront — not standard. Release-ready files come after mastering with streaming and download formats.

Turnaround

First mix usually lands within five to ten business days after complete delivery, depending on queue. Rush is sometimes possible at extra cost if the calendar allows — ask early.

If stems are incomplete we pause the clock until everything is in. That avoids half-finished mixes that must be redone.

Planning a single release? Mention mastering in the same email thread so we can propose one timeline from mix approval through export.

Archive and files

We keep mix projects for 12 months on secure storage in Amsterdam. Download your final mix within that window; afterwards files are deleted unless you buy an extension.

Large uploads use links; physical drives are accepted by appointment at Van Boetzelaerstraat 35. Check spam if download mail is missing — we send from [email protected].

Not included

Mastering, video mix, Dolby Atmos, podcast narrative editing, sample clearance and live recording sit outside mixing. Podcast and voice-over has its own hourly rates.

External AI processing on your stems is your choice; we mix what you supply without guarantees about sample origin.

FAQ

What is the difference between track and stem pricing?

Track pricing applies when we mix multitracks from a session in our studio. Stem pricing applies when you export every track yourself and deliver per our checklist.

How many references should I send?

Three songs is ideal: one for overall balance, one for vocal tone, one for drum character perhaps. More references slow decisions down.

Do you mix in my DAW?

We work in our studio setup for consistency. You receive mixdowns, not project files unless commercially agreed otherwise.

Can mix and mastering happen the same week?

Often yes if mastering is booked right after mix approval. Reserve mastering via contact so we hold calendar space.

What if my stems are out of sync?

We fix small offsets. Large errors need a fresh export from you; extra time may be billed if it goes beyond the normal import check.
